The Hungry Family

The Hungry Family
“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”
Isaiah 30:21

One Saturday afternoon, I invited my friend Najwa to go visit a refugee family I had been visiting for many months. She was ready and excited, and so was I, because I had planned on surprising the family with a large platter of shawarma, fries and veggies for us to eat together. So, I bought the big platter and then called the family to confirm we could head their way, but quite unfortunately, they explained that they weren’t home but would be back in one hour’s time.

In retrospect, I should have called first to confirm they would be home, before purchasing that big platter of food, but I was so eager to surprise them that I assumed they would be home as usual, and now I was stuck with that big platter. With the big hot platter in my hand, I looked at Najwa and asked: “What are we gonna do? We can’t wait for 1 hour, the food is gonna get cold” Suddenly, right at that moment, I felt a heavy burden on my heart for another family—the family Najwa had introduced me to some weeks back.

A few weeks prior, we had gone to visit a very poor family. A seven-months pregnant woman had received us at the threshold of her house. Standing there, we asked how she and her family were doing and she explained that her son was sick suffering from a skin disease caused by some insect bite and that the disease had spread all over his body and that they didn’t know what had happened. I quickly assumed he might have gotten bitten by ticks or bed bugs and I immediately expressed to Najwa (in a language the host couldn’t understand) that I wasn’t comfortable going into their home because the very room where they would receive us is actually their bedroom. (In that culture, the Arabic majlis sofa is a bed at night and during the day it is the seating area for the guests). Despite her invitation for us to come in and drink tea, we quickly excused ourselves, explained we simply wanted to say a ‘brief hi”. We prayed for her and her family and ran away. I felt horrible and grieved that I didn’t have that love, compassion and faith that Jesus had when He touched, prayed and healed the lepers. In that moment, I was more concerned about myself than this lady's family.

But, here we were 3 weeks later with a hot platter of food and the Holy Spirit’s prompting—bringing that family back to my remembrance. Najwa and I agreed to go visit them and we drove there directly, without even calling them. They were home and so delighted to receive us. I was humbled by the sheer poverty and I silently wondered how they could survive in such a mold-infested environment. We told them we had a big platter of food that we wanted to share with them for us to eat together and they were so happy and so famished! She explained that they had nothing at home and didn’t even know where their next meal would come from. They ate everything on the platter and we could see that they had been starving! After they had eaten to their hearts’ content, we shared the gospel with them and they listened. They asked questions and expressed a desire to know more about the Jesus we were preaching.

Sometimes, God leads us to places we would never go ourselves. We, human beings, limit ourselves by what we see, feel, smell, hear, taste but God looks beyond. If we want to look beyond, like God, we have to allow the Holy Spirit within us to lead us. God knew that family was starving and that day He not only provided for their physical need (as they ate the food we brought to their heart’s content), emotional need (as we poured our love on them and took time to listen to them and empathize with them) but He also provided for their spiritual need (as we shared the Gospel with them). When we follow the Lord's leading, we get to witness the beautiful work of His hand and it makes it all worthwhile to never ignore His guidance and direction.

Closing Prayer
Precious Heavenly Father, You care for the poor, the famished, the neglected, and You never fail to provide for them. Thank You that when we follow Your leading, You invite us to be part of Your miracles. We can be Your hands and feet to those You love. Thank You Lord for this great honor and privilege to partner with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Question for Reflection

What are some ways that God speaks to us?

Throughout the Scriptures, we see that God speaks to us in various ways. If seek guidance and direction from the Lord, we can expect to hear Him speak through the following different ways:
God speaks to us through creation.
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun. It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth.” - Psalm 19:1-6 (NIV)
“The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” - Romans 1:18-20 (NIV)
God speaks to us through His Word.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” - 2 Timothy 3:16,17 NIV)
God speaks to us through circumstances.
Example:
God allowed plagues (circumstances) to convince Pharaoh to let the Israelites to go from Egypt, but Pharaoh refused and hardened his heart, in spite of God’s numerous miraculous signs and wonders. He eventually surrendered when the last plague took his son’s life [ see Exodus 7:8 - 11:10 (NIV) ]
God speaks to us through the Holy Spirit.
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” - John 14:26 (NIV)
“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.” - John 16:13 (NIV)
God speaks to us through prophets, teachers and encouragers.
“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.” - Romans 12:6-8 (NIV)
God speaks to us through dreams and visions.
Examples:
OLD TESTAMENT: Abraham (Genesis 15:1), Abimelech (Genesis 20:1-7), Jacob (Genesis 28:10-17), Joseph (Genesis 37:1-11), Pharaoh’s cupbearer and baker (Genesis 40), Pharaoh (Genesis 41), Samuel (1 Samuel 3), The Midianite and Amalekite armies (Judges 7:12-15), Solomon (1 Kings 3:5), Daniel (Daniel 2; 4)
NEW TESTAMENT: Zacharias (Luke 1:5-23), Joseph (Matthew 1:20; 2:13), Pilate’s wife (Matthew 27:19), Ananias (Acts 9:10), Cornelius (Acts 10:1-6), Peter (Acts 10:9-15), Paul (Acts 16:9-10) | (Acts 18:9-11) | (2 Corinthians 12:1-6), John (Revelation)
God speaks to us through in whichever way He pleases.
“For God does speak—now one way, now another—though no one perceives it.” - Job 33:14 (NIV)
