Love Deepens

by HEIDI J. SMITH LOVE Marriage
Love Deepens
“I pray that you, being rooted and firmly established in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the length and width, height and depth of God’s love.”
Ephesians 3:17b-18

“Mom, where are you?” My daughter yelled as the door slammed behind her.

“I’m in the living room,” I called back.

A huge grin covered her face as she held out her hand. “I’m engaged,” she gushed. The diamond sparkled just like her eyes.

“We were metal detecting by the lake, and the ring was hidden under the dirt. I bent down to see what it was and he knelt down to ask me to marry him,” she beamed and we hugged.

Memories flashed through my mind of birthday parties and tea parties. How could I have a daughter old enough to be a bride?

It reminded me of my engagement and how much I loved my fiancé. After decades of marriage, our love has changed as we have weathered the seasons of life. The challenges and trials have forged an even deeper love.

I pray that their love will remain firm and deepen as their relationship blossoms. The apostle Paul prayed a similar prayer for the Ephesians.

“I pray that you, being rooted and firmly established in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the length and width, height and depth of God’s love.” Ephesians. 3:17b-18

As believers, Christ dwells in our hearts and desires a relationship that deepens as we grow even closer to Him. We need to be strengthened in His spirit and secure in His love for us. Our love for God needs to be like a tree with strong roots.

God’s love is unfathomable. If we think of the cross pointing in all directions, the length lasts forever (Jeremiah 31:3) and the width covers the entire world (John 3;16). It reaches high to the heavens (Eph. 2:6) and low to death on the cross (Phil. 2:7-8).

What an amazing love the Father has for us! May we understand this love and be committed to love Him deeper in return.

As my daughter gazes at that sparkling diamond ring, she is reminded of her fiancé’s love. When we look at the cross, be reminded of God’s love for us.

No time left to write - I have a wedding to plan! Through this time, may the Father teach our family even more about His deepening love.

Closing Prayer
Dear heavenly Father, Thank you for your love to us. Thank you that it lasts forever, reaches everyone, goes as high as the heavens and as deep as death on the cross. Please help us to comprehend it and grow deeper in our walk with you. When we look at the cross, may we be reminded of your love and share this with others. Thank you that nothing can separate us from your love. In Jesus name, Amen.

Romans 8:38-39, “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
